Be Active Without Exercise

Not feeling up to exercise?

That’s OK.

Having “bad days” is part of living with PAH. If you are not feeling up to doing your normal level of activity, take the opportunity to try something new. You might be surprised at the activities you may discover you enjoy. Here are some things you can try when you’re not "up" for exercise:

Meditation

There are many ways to meditate, but in its simplest form, it really is just a type of relaxation. You can meditate by focusing your attention on a single sound or thought and eliminating the other sounds and thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress.

There are many emotional and physical benefits of meditation. Meditation can help you gain a new perspective on stressful situations, focus on the present, and reduce negative emotions—all important for people living with PAH.

Relaxation exercises

Living with PAH can be stressful, so even if you are maintaining your normal exercise routine, you should take some time to try relaxing. When you’re feeling stressed, taking time out to relax can help reduce feelings of anger or frustration.

There are many relaxation exercises you can try, including:

  • Progressive muscle relaxation: Flex and then relax your muscles in a systematic order. You should flex for about 5 seconds and relax for about 30 seconds
  • Visualization: Create a mental image that can transport you to a peaceful, calm place
  • Body scan meditation: Stay completely still and focus on the sensation in each part of your body
