EXERCISE

Exercise Do’s & Don’ts

Important: Follow your doctor’s advice for how to help manage your PAH with treatment. Exercise alone is not a treatment for PAH. Talk to your PAH doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Do

  • Always speak to your PAH doctor before beginning any exercise plan
  • Set reasonable goals for yourself
  • Start out slow and pace yourself
  • Vary your routine to keep things interesting
  • Do lower intensity exercises when you aren’t being monitored by a doctor
  • Take breaks
  • Find something enjoyable to do with friends and family
  • Stop exercising if you experience severe shortness of breath, feel lightheaded, or experience chest pain

Don’t

  • Start exercising without speaking to your PAH doctor first
  • Weightlift anything over 15 pounds
  • Exercise during hot, humid, or extremely cold weather
  • Work out your upper and lower body at the same time
  • Exercise alone
  • Become dehydrated
  • Become discouraged if you are struggling. It’s OK to take a break or to stop
